Niels is a 4th year PhD-student in Dr. Thomas Lamonerie’s lab which focuses in part on neurodevelopmental causes of mental disorders.

At one of our last meeting, Niels gave a complete overview of sexual dimorphism in psychiatric diseases, showing that the prevalence rates, the range of symptoms, as well as the efficiency of treatments regarding mental illnesses differ highly between both sexes.  Taking advantage of his expertise on this subject, he strikingly spotlighted that men and women are not equal in the face of psychiatric disorders. Research has historically often discarded women and females in clinical and pre-clinical studies, respectively, which poses a serious societal issue. Fortunately, sexual dimorphism in mental diseases draws increasingly more attention in recent studies that Niels shared with us. This fascinating topic is, notably, the centre of interest of his thesis project.

If you want to find more about sexual dimorphism in psychiatric disorders, don’t hesitate to have a look at Niels’ detailed presentation on the iBV common server. You can also see the great paper he recently published in the Neurobiology of Disease  journal as a second author. Congratulations Niels!
