For this session, we had the privilege of welcoming Océane Tournière and Eleonora Meschi, two postdoctoral researchers from the Hudry lab at the iBV, who shared their experiences and provided valuable insights into navigating an academic career.
They began by offering a comprehensive overview of the expectations placed on postdocs worldwide, highlighting the many roles they must juggle – from leading independent research projects to mentoring students, applying for grants, and developing essential networking skills. They provided practical advice on how and when to start searching for a postdoc position, what factors to consider when choosing a lab, and how to approach the interview process to maximize success.
A key part of their discussion focused on the different funding agencies that support postdoctoral research in France and internationally. They detailed the eligibility criteria and application requirements for each, but more importantly, they emphasized the benefits of securing independent funding – not only in terms of financial support but also in gaining visibility and becoming part of prestigious scientific communities that can foster long-term career development.
Beyond funding and research, Océane and Eleonora highlighted the importance of actively engaging with the scientific community. They encouraged participation in conferences, not just as attendees but as presenters, to showcase research, connect with experts in the field, and build a strong professional network. They also stressed the value of broader science communication, advocating for researchers to take an active role in making science more accessible to the public through outreach initiatives and collaborations beyond academia.
Ultimately, they underscored the importance of being proactive, stepping out of one’s comfort zone, and taking strategic risks. By seeking out new opportunities, embracing challenges, and fostering meaningful connections, postdocs can position themselves for a successful and fulfilling research career.
