Genetic Code Expansion Technology: Bridging Chemistry and Biology

Abstract:

To understand biological processes, it is desirable to be able to manipulate proteins with spatial and temporal precision in order to investigate protein structure-function relationships, protein activities and interactions, and generate proteins and organisms with new properties. The advance in the Genetic Code Expansion technology has allowed the incorporation of unnatural amino acids with special properties at specific sites in a protein within cells and multicellular organisms.  This Synthetic Biology approach has given biologists numerous tools for protein engineering and biological studies.  Given the potential of the technology, the creation of a ‘Genetic Code Expansion facility’ at iBV has been proposed.  At the interface of biology and chemistry, this facility will help iBV teams benefit from the advance in Synthetic Biology by implementing the rapidly growing Genetic Code Expansion technology.
