SUMMARY:Hugues LORTAT-JACOB
DESCRIPTION:From: Institut de Biologie Structurale\, Grenoble \n  \nWill give a seminar entitled: \nGlycosaminoglycans: Master regulators of molecular encounters at the cell surface \nGAGs are complex polysaccharides\, ubiquitously present at the cell surface and within extracellular matrices (ECM). Through their ability to bind a large array of proteins\, almost 4000 of which have been identified to date – including most signaling proteins – GAGs regulate key biologic processes at the cell–tissue interface. To do so\, GAGs provide scaffolds to ensure that proteins mediating specific functions will be presented at the correct site and time and also impact the stability\, the structure and the reactivity of their protein ligands. \nDuring this seminar I will describe how GAGs and chemokines (a family of chemoattractant cytokines) contribute to maintain haptotactic gradients within tissues along which cells can migrate directionally. Using CXCL12 (stromal cell-derived factor 1) as a model system I will show that GAG-chemokine complex also serves additional purposes that go well beyond a simple immobilization process\, including controlling receptor recognition and activation. \nI will also introduce the notion of specificity in protein-GAG interactions. To understand how protein binding sites can be imprinted along the GAG chain during their biosynthesis I will describe the X-ray crystallographic or CryoEM 3D-structure of several enzymes involved in GAGs polymerization and maturation. \nSpeaker website

SUMMARY:EMBO Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, the Valrose campus will host the prestigious EMBO Workshop – International D-Amino Acid Research (IDAR2026)\, which will take place from 23 to 26 August 2026\, co-organized by iBV. \nThe workshop focuses on D‑amino acids\, long overlooked but now recognized as key players in neuroscience\, immunology\, microbiology\, and medicine. Recent discoveries highlight their roles in synaptic plasticity\, microbiome interactions\, age-related protein modifications\, and potential involvement in neurodegeneration and cancer. \nChirality research is one of the main research axes at iBV\, focusing on the role of non-superimposable mirror-image shapes in life across biological scales\, with several research teams working at the molecular (Banreti)\, organ\, and organism levels (Noselli\, Furthauer\, Lepage). Research on D-amino acids is a central aspect of molecular chirality. \nThe workshop will provide participants the opportunity to: \n\nShare the latest scientific and methodological advances\,\nFoster interdisciplinary collaborations\,\nTrain and support early-career researchers in this rapidly evolving area.\n\nIDAR2026 is the largest international forum dedicated to D-amino acid research\, bringing together experts in structural biology\, analytical chemistry\, enzymology\, neuroscience\, immunology\, and translational medicine. It offers a unique opportunity to immerse in a cutting-edge field.
